Buck will be ready fetch all your birds for the 2010 duck season. With it's close proximity of the
water long after the mainland of Alaska has frozen solid. The fresh water on Kodiak rarely
freezes over until late fall or early winter. Usually going through freeze/thaw cycles that often
just help to concentrate birds. The salt water around Kodiak Island never freezes except in
the head of some protected bays with large amounts of fresh water. This makes The Ugak
Bay area a great travel destination for early migratory ducks such as mallards, northern pintails,
widgeon, green wing teal & gadwall. Many of which never go any farther south. Also large
numbers of harlequins, one of the most sought after waterfowl species in North America. The
distinctively marked;blue-gray harlequin spends most of the year in Alaska. Many harlequin
winter in Ugak Bay. Other salt water species found in Ugak Bay include barrows goldeneye,
common eider, king eider, common goldeneye, bufflehead, surf scoter, black scoter, white
winged scoter, oldsquaw and red breasted mergansers. All these birds area available
throughout the season. Which opens October 8 and closes January 22. Duck hunting can
easily combined with Sitka Black tail hunting along with salmon and halibut fishing any time
after October 8. Rick's favorite hunting areas are brackish lagoons and backwater bays around
Ugak Bay. Hunting these areas, provides a great mix of fresh and saltwater birds, either over
decoys, pass shooting or jump shooting. Like all areas in the USA non toxic shot is required.
Heavy shots like Bismuth work well, but are not a must. We all know how disappointing steel
shot can be at times. There are plenty of opportunities to shot. Because of stricter airline
weight restrictions of 50 lbs. per luggage piece. Shotgun shells can be easily purchased in
Kodiak. Cy's sporting goods carries all shot sizes and types. AAA River Inn has a good
selection of neoprene chest waders, which provide warm waterproof protection against the
elements. A good camouflage, rainproof water foul jacket is a good thing to bring with you.
For a great one of a kind duck hunting experience. Plan a day or two of prime duck hunting on
your Fish Kodiak Adventure. All you really need to bring is your 12 gauge and you are set.
